121: Shame vs Guilt and The Human Experience

Today we’re talking about an important subject and one that can have such a big impact on our lives, especially if we don’t understand it. We’re talking about the shame and the guilt that so many mothers, including ourselves, feel each and every day. As you know, we’re reading Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart with our Patreon Book Club, and in the book she helps define what that human experience is for us, and the book can really help us to start to understand the difference between those two words, shame and guilt.

What is so fascinating is that shame and guilt are words that are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference that we need to be aware of. We’ll dive deep into that difference in this episode, as well as share both of our personal experiences with these feelings, along with self-compassion, perfectionism, humiliation, and embarrassment.

These feelings don’t only plague motherhood, but other extremely important parts of our lives as well. Shame is part of the human experience, and we really want to bring it into the light so this community can start growing together. We hope that you can learn from us, and maybe give yourself the empathy that you really need much earlier than we have in the past with ourselves.
